With main campus and satellite campuses in Nicaragua, Universidad Central de Nicaragua UCN, is a fully autonomous recognised university enjoying the same entitlements and degree awarding powers as e.g. British autonomous universities and recognised bodies (recognised awarding institutions). UCN was approved by CNU, the National Council of Universities, the accreditation body in charge of institutional approval of a new university prior to award of autonomy status by Act of Legislation; additionally UCN is subject to participation in the quality assurance programme in accordance with the Act on Quality Assurance in Higher Education in collaboration with the CNEA the National Council of Evaluation and Accreditation in Nicaragua. In 2011 UCN has been awarded “Exemplary Central American University 2010” by the Central American Association in the USA. Universidad Central de Nicaragua can issue academic and professional qualifications, enjoys academic autonomy understood as follows: Teaching or academic autonomy implies that a universities alone can appoint and dismiss teachers and academic staff, through the procedures and requirements of the laws themselves, select their students, by evidence and necessary conditions to develop and approve plans and programmes of study and research, etc. Autonomy gives also the power to issue certificates of study, graduate letters, certificates, diplomas, academic degrees and titles and equivalency of studies conducted in other universities and higher education institutions, domestic or foreign; authorise professional practice except advocacy and notary, which by law is the responsibility of the Supreme Court. Universities will maintain and develop relationships with academic, scientific and cultural entities based inside or outside the country. Academic freedom is a fundamental principle of higher education in Nicaragua.
Universidad Central de Nicaragua UCN European Programmes is a direct university extension, a legally established non-profit organisation registered in Austria -as Deanship of UCN in Europe.
Universidad Central de Nicaragua UCN is listed in the IAU International Handbook of Universities.
Universidad Central de Nicaragua UCN is internationally accredited by ASIC Accreditation Service for International Colleges and Universities, with “Premier University” status.
The UCN Deanship of European and International Programmes is based in Austria, where all programmes provided in Austria have been duly approved and registered by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research as comparable with Austrian university programmes and degrees in accordance with the requirements of the Austrian Act on Quality Assurance in Higher Education. 2012 - 2022.
Universidad Central de Nicaragua UCN participates in the quality assurance process launched nationally by CNEA in 2012 and after the long legal period of 10 years UCN expects institutional accreditation by CNEA in 2022. This new legal requirement applies to all Nicaraguan universities and will further improve the quality assurance in higher education in Nicaragua.

CONIES - ICHE
UCN and Universidad Azteca launched CONIES Confederación Internacional de Estudios Superiores with partner universities in Managua in March 2012.
The Convention of CONIES was formally signed at the ceremony in Managua.
Prof. Berchtold was awarded by UCN Rector Magnificus Ing. Dr. Giberto Cuadra Solórzano for his achievements in quality development and modernisation of distance education at the event.
Central University of Nicaragua - UCN was founded in 1997. Is a private, non-profit and authorized by the National University Council in session CNU 10-98 No of November 18, 1998 and approved by the Assembly of the Republic Decree No. 2822 according to the Constitution of the Republic and the Law on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education and enjoys full academic, financial, organizational and administrative autonomy.
The idea came from a group of businessmen and academics with extensive practical experience in the educational field who decide to found the UCN returning to the path of the former Central University in the 40's opened their classrooms to receive students who later became leading figures in the political, academic and social development.
The Board of the UCN and the Chancellor Gilberto Cuadra Solórzano and academic staff have developed modern curricula for each of the career that this university teaches, and give young people a full preparation in the human, intellectual and professional.

The Central University of Nicaragua inspired by values and ethical principles exists for the purpose of training comprehensive professional and entrepreneurs, able to successfully face the challenges imposed by the globalized world, through innovative learning teaching process, focusing on the student as subject active in their own education.

The vision of the Central University of Nicaragua is to be a recognized higher education institution for having a consolidated multidisciplinary educational project through the implementation of projects that allow comprehensive institutional development, academically competitive and committed to a quality education incorporating research and extension in their educational processes.

- National Council of Universities CNU for institutional authorisation of universities before they achieve autonomy by Act of Law No. 89 Law on Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education: UCN is a fully autonomous university with full and recognised degree awarding authority
- CNEA National Council for Evaluation and Accreditation within the National System for Quality Assurance in Education, Law No. 704 (UCN participates in the Quality Assurance and Institutional Accreditation process with CNEA) UCN is candidate for accreditation by CNEA.
- CONIES Board of Accreditation has accredited international postgraduate Master and Doctor programmes offered by UCN as TNE, online and collaborative provision.
- OTHM, England. UCN European Programmes is an approved Centre by OTHM offering various Level 7 OTHM qualifications accredited and recognised by OFQUAL in England. UCN integrates the OTHM curricula and qualifications in MBA and DBA degree programmes.
